There’s nothing quite like watching a celebrity or politician put through a painful purgatorial challenge to loosen the viewing-public’s purse strings. It’s a fundraising tactic that’s helped Comic Relief raise a staggering £1.25 billion for British and international charities over the years. Given that Kilimanjaro: The Bigger Red Nose Climb (BBC One) managed to keep nine famous faces in more or less constant fear and pain for eight days, it deserves to swell the pot by hundreds of thousands of pounds more.

The idea was to replicate a Comic Relief challenge set 10 years ago: to climb Africa’s highest mountain – which at 5895m/19,000 feet is no easy ask for experienced climbers, let alone a bunch…
