'Can I go and see my wife give birth?' – Joe Day skips Newport's celebrations after partner goes into labour during Cup tie

Mike Flynn has revealed that goalkeeper Joe Day asked him in the wake of Newport”s 2-0 win over Middlesbrough, “Gaffer, can I now go and see my wife give birth to twins, please?”

Day’s wife went into labour during Tuesday night’s FA Cup fourth round replay win and the 28 -year-old was understandably quick to leave Rodney Parade.

But only after he received permission from his manager.

“Joe is that much of a professional he turned his phone off,” Flynn said. “I didn’t even have to hide it from him. And as soon as the game was over, he checked it and said, ‘Gaffer, thanks a lot, but can I go now?’ I said ‘Of course you can, do you need a lift?’ As soon as the whistle went, he sprinted off. If they come tonight, what a special birthday they will have.”

Day missed the original tie at Middlesbrough because there was no family on hand to look after his wife in case of complications. But this time, there were relatives in the vicinity, allowing him to play.
