The developer of Apex Legends, Respawn Entertainment, has revealed that ‘Season 1’ of the hit battle royale game will begin tomorrow as it continues its assault on the popularity of cultural phenomenon Fortnite. The season is dubbed Wild Frontier and will introduce a new ‘Legend’ called Octane to the game’s diverse roster.
Respawn also revealed that Season 1 will bring the game’s first ‘Battle Pass’, which will be available for players to buy when Wild Frontier starts at 5pm GMT on 19 March. Once purchased, players can level up by playing through the game to unlock more than 100 cosmetic items and character costumes.
Buyers of the battle pass will instantly unlock three Wild Frontier themed costumes –the Lifeline revolutionary skin, the Wraith survivor skin and the Mirage outlaw skin– while any player that logs in during Wild Frontier has the opportunity to unlock one costume and a smaller selection of items and ‘Apex Pack’ loot boxes.
The concept of multiple Seasons has been popularised by long-running ‘live service’ video games such as Destiny and Fortnite. The latter, in particular, has had vast success with its seasons and the attached ‘Battle Passes’. Fortnite made its creator Epic Games $2.4bn through these in-game purchases last year –the most annual revenue of a single game in history– despite the game itself being free-to-play.
