Funding for cyber defences cut to fight against terrorism

The UK risks failing to tackle the threat of cyber attacks after cuts to a £1.3bn plan to protect the nation from hackers saw funds diverted to instead defend against terrorism.

The National Audit Office warned the billion pound cyber security programme, which has included major new spending initiatives like GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre, was on track to miss objectives on three quarters of its projects.

The NAO said £169m, about a third of its first two years of funding, was transferred from the cyber project to other national security measures, delaying its implementation.
