Geraint Thomas targets time trial at UCI Road World Championships as Great Britain finalises its squad

Geraint Thomas will target the world time trial title at next week’s UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire, before later in the week also lining up in the men’s road race.
Despite having won five time trials throughout his career, Thomas has never before competed in national colours in the race against the clock.
With reigning world champion Rohan Dennis (Australia), the recently crowned Vuelta a España champion Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) and world hour record holder Victor Campenaerts (Belgium) having already been named in the starting list the Welshman can expect to face a tough test on the punchy 54km course from Northallerton to Harrogate on Sept 25.
Matt Brammeier, British Cycling’s elite men’s road coach, however, believes Thomas and Alex Dowsett, the six-time national time trial champion, have the experience and form to produce strong rides.
“Looking at the time trial, we have selected two very experienced time trial riders this year in G [Thomas] and Alex, both of whom suit the course and as such we can expect to see good performances from them both,” Brammeier said in a British Cycling statement.
“G will then stick around to compete in the road race on the Sunday, and will no doubt be a valuable asset to the team in the final laps.”
