‘Tis the season to be marathon training. And absolutely hating it. The dark evenings are bad enough, but now that it’s bitterly cold outside, it’s tempting to just light the fire and curl up on the sofa with your favourite Netflix series. 

But before you convince yourself it’s too cold to head outside, you may need to reassess. Because despite the myths around catching a cold, running in icy weather can make you healthier: research has shown we burn more calories when exercising outside on a cold day. One study from the University of Colorado found that our production of ATPL (a chemical that promotes fat storage) almost doubles during winter, but exercise offsets this.
