Manuel Petrovic of Romford appeared at the Old Bailey via videolink on Monday morning following his arrest last week.
He was wearing a yellow and green tracksuit jacket and spoke only to confirm his address, date of birth and nationality.
Mr Petrovic lives a 10-minute drive from the park in Harold Hill where Jodie was stabbed in the back on March 1.
He was arrested on suspicion of murder in Leicester last Tuesday.
Members of his family were sat in the front row of the public gallery, facing a large screen which showed Mr Petrovic sitting in a blue prison room.
