England read the pitch completely differently to West Indies, picking two spinners in contrast to the home side’s four seamers. With Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid bowling poorly, Joe Root had to continually call upon his prized assets Anderson and Stokes.
“Yes, potentially with hindsight,” said Buttler when asked if England had erred in selection. “It was a tough, brave call for the guys who make those decisions. Selection is not why we were 77 all out. That is the biggest factor in the game at the moment. Whether our selection was right or not, if we had scored runs in the first innings we would have been in a position to utilise that bowling attack. We did not get the runs on the board which probably highlighted that (selection).”
