Lena Dunham's remake fails to live up to Julia Davis's perfect original

One has to wonder what Lena Dunham (the creator of Girls) and long-time writing partner Jenni Konner were thinking when they decided to adapt Julia Davis’s Camping (Sky Atlantic) for US television.

The original series, which was shown in 2016, was perfect: macabre, grotesque and hilarious, plopping a group of old friends in a drab Devon camping site for a weekend of misery. Dunham’s version casts Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner – back on the small screen after a significant hiatus – and David Tennant (with an American accent) as the lead couple with the action unfolding in California. It was always going to be a strange transplant.
