Are you damn well good enough to sink that 18th pint of plain? We begin with seven races on today’s card with the feature, the Champion Hurdle, going off at 3.30pm. Buveur D’Air, who never seems to need to push himself hard and consequently inspires only a portion of the affection his record deserves, is gunning to join Hatton’s Grace, Sir Ken, Persian War, See You Then and Istabraq, the immortals with a hat-trick of wins. Hardy Eustace, most recently, went for a third successive Champion Hurdle in 2006 and finished three and a half lengths back having suffered a blood infection in the January. Our man Marlborough thinks it unlikely that Buveur d’Air will achieve the treble and both he and the Sunday Tel’s Whistler are tipping against him, plumping for Apple’s Jade and Laurina respectively.
Throughout the afternoon we will have contributions from both Marlborough and Whistler, our betting reporter Ross Clarke, The Telegraph’s chief sports writer, Paul Hayward, racing correspondent, Marcus Armytage and our man in the blue tweed Ulster, Alan Tyers. Let the festivities commence.
