A Londoner has used a stock image of an egg to break the world record for the most popular picture on Instagram.
The Instagrammer, who refused to reveal their real identity, has dethroned reality TV star Kylie Jenner as the holder of the “most-liked” picture on the social media site.
The image of a single speckled brown egg on a white background has so far attracted 39 million “likes” online.
The “world-record-egg” account opened on January 4 and currently has 5.3 million followers. On Monday it gained a coveted blue “verified” tick on Instagram after several copycat accounts cropped up on the site.
In its solo post on the Facebook-owned app, the Instagrammer shared the egg picture with the caption: “Let’s set a world record together and get the most-liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this.”
The user said the experiment started out as something funny but turned into a “whirlwind week” after thousands of “likes” poured in.
The idea of attempting to break the record for the most popular photo occured to him when he was doing dry January.
“I was sitting at home reading an article online about the top 20 Instagram posts of 2018,” he said.
