Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, opened a rare meeting with North Korea’s chief negotiator in Washington on Friday with the aim of arranging a second summit between the two countries’ leaders.
Mr Pompeo and Kim Yong-chol did not respond to shouted questions as they posed for pictures before entering a meeting room at a hotel in the US capital.
The meeting is being closely watched amid speculation it could lay the groundwork for a second round of talks between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
There are tentative plans after the talks to head to the White House for a possible meeting with Mr Trump. The US president has spoken several times of having a second summit early this year and has exchanged multiple letters with Kim.
