When West Indies last played a Test at Kensington Oval – a day/nighter – they lost to Sri Lanka. England, however, cannot laugh. When they last played a Test on this ground, they batted timidly and lost to the hosts.
In this day and age, when nobody ever seems to take responsibility for something going wrong, it was refreshing to hear all-rounder Moeen Ali put up his hand.
“I’ve bowled poorly a lot of times,” Moeen said disarmingly. “But that was probably the worst I ever bowled in an England shirt and I want to put that right.”
In that Test in 2015, Moeen had been recalled too soon after a side strain, without sufficient overs of off-spin. “I’d just come back from injury, I was straight back into the side after the World Cup and I was the only spinner. I bowled – bad.
“Looking at the wicket here, I think it is going to be good for everybody – batting, a bit of bounce probably, and there will definitely be some spin, I think.”
