Mother in FGM case 'betrayed' three-year-old daughter by mutilating her, as she is sentenced to 13 years

The first person to be convicted of FMG in Britain “betrayed” her three-year-old daughter by mutilating her, a judge said, as she jailed her for 13 years

The 37-year-old Ugandan woman was found guilty of cutting her three-year-old daughter at her home during the 2017 summer holidays. After helping a “witch” carry out the practice, she then cast a series of black magic spells.

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for cutting her toddler daughter, and an extra two years for indecent images of children and animal pornography as police raided her home following her arrest.

Jailing her, Mrs Justice Whipple said: “The person mutilated was your daughter. She was just three years old when you cut her. FGM has long been against our law, and let’s be clear: FGM is a form of child abuse.

“It involves deliberate physical mutilation. It is a barbaric practice and a serious crime.

“You committed this offence at home, where she should have felt safe, and as her mother you betrayed her trust in you as her protector.”
