Joe Day has revealed he missed the birth of his twin daughters on Tuesday night to help Newport County reach the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in 70 years.
Goals from Robbie Willmott and Padraig Amond gave Newport a 2-0 replay win over Middlesbrough, and set up a dream home tie with Manchester City on Feb 16, but there was no time for the Newport goalkeeper to join in the post-match celebrations.
Day’s wife, Lizzie, gave him her blessing to play in the game even though her waters had broken before kick-off. He had sat out the first meeting of the sides just in case the twins arrived, but played in the replay and missed the arrival of Sophia Grace and Emelia Lillie.
“We always knew there was a chance the birth would fall during the match, but Lizzie backed me and made it an easy decision for me to play the game,” Day said.
“Nothing was really happening at midday on Tuesday, but as I was driving to the game Lizzie called me to say her waters had gone. I got to the ground when she was being taken to the labour ward, but she told me to concentrate on the game.”
