Public worry over Brexit now rivals economic concern during the financial crash

Public concern over Britain’s relationship with Europe has hit record breaking levels, according to polling.

As many as 67 per cent of Britons cited Brexit as a major issue for the country in December – the highest figure ever recorded on this issue of the EU or the Common market, stretching back to 1974.

It is extremely rare for public concern to reach this sort of level on any issue according to the data from Ipsos MORI’s Issues Index, which shows that worry over an individual issue has not been this high since October 2011 when 68 per cent of the public listed the economy as a top issue.

It means concern over Brexit now rivals levels recorded during some of the most serious crises of the past…
