'Sandwich carers' suffering depression and anxiety, official figures show

“Sandwich carers”, those looking after both for their own children and elderly relatives, are suffering depression and anxiety significantly worse than the general population, Office for National Statistics data reveals.

Twenty-seven per cent complained of some form of mental health problem, compared to the 22 per cent norm, the survey found.

This figure rises to one in three of those providing 20 hours or more of care per week, compared with 23 per cent of those who provide less than five hours of care per week.

More than 1.3 million people in the UK are now sandwich carers, in part due to the increasing life expectancy and women having their first child at an older age, according to the ONS….
