Sheffield United Women striker Sophie Jones has been charged by the Football Association for racially abusing Tottenham Hotspur Ladies defender Renee Hector.
Hector, 23, alleged that she was subjected to monkey noises during her side’s 2-1 away win over the Blades in the FA Women’s Championship last month, tweeting: “Such a shame that racism seems to be rising up again in football – I received some monkey noises today from an opposition player. The only reaction was to let the football do the talking and that we did great start to the year!”
An FA spokesperson confirmed that Jones has been charged with an “aggravated breach” of FA Rule E3: using “abusive and/or insulting” language that includes “reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race”.
Jones has until until Feb 15 to respond to the charge.
A Sheffield United spokesperson said: “Sheffield United Football Club has been notified that a member of the Club’s Women’s team has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3, pending a formal Football Association disciplinary hearing.
“The alleged incident took place in the FA Women’s Championship fixture against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies on Sunday Jan 6 2019. The Club has co-operated fully with the Football Association’s investigation throughout the subsequent weeks.
