Every international coach’s worst nightmare is to have key players injured on the eve of a major tournament.
With so many games being played – both domestically and in Europe – the chances of having everyone available are slim to none so the likes of Eddie Jones, Joe Schmidt, Gregor Townsend and Warren Gatland must simply cross their fingers and pray.
Last year, England were rocked by a debilitating injury list and ended up finishing a disappointing fifth. This time, though, Jones has been able to pick from a position of relative strength. The Australian has even claimed this to be the strongest squad of players he has had the luxury of selecting since taking charge, injuries permitting.
But while England are missing very few key personnel this year, Ireland Scotland and Wales have been hit, especially in the forwards. Scotland and Wales, in particular, are shorn of some big names in the back row.
