Thousands of Belgians brave the cold to take a dip in the North Sea

About 3‚000 people braved the cold on Saturday to mark the arrival of the new year with a chilly plunge into the North Sea off Ostend, Belgium.

The freezing winter temperatures proved no deterrent for the brave swimmers, who charged into full speed into the waters dressed up in various costumes.

While some did little more than wet their ankles, others lay down and fully embraced the chilly waves.

The New Year’s dive is an annual event for the Belgian coastal city of Ostend; it first started in 1987.
