Mr Bezos has been a long standing target of the president’s, in part because of his ownership of the Washington Post which has been critical of his administration. Mr Bezos acquired The Washington Post for $250m in 2013.
The president has also previously tweeted claims that Amazon benefits from billions of dollars in subsidies from the US Postal Service while paying “little or no taxes to state and local governments”. In response to the negative attacks, Amazon is said to have assembled the largest lobbying team of any tech company in Washington DC.
The National Enquirer said it tailed Mr Bezos and Ms Sanchez across five US states over the course of four months, resulting in a nine page story which included photos of them boarding a private jet, eating together in a restaurant and what it claims are illicit text messages sent between the two.
