“If you win trophies, that’s a fantastic day for everyone in the club, the best time of your life, because you never know when the next one is going to come,” Solskjaer said when asked about Pochettino’s remarks. “The [former] manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] always said, ‘Enjoy this, whatever trophy you win, you have just got to enjoy it’.
“I am not here to discuss what Pochettino says and what other managers say. I am just saying that at this club, we are looking to win trophies. We are about winning trophies, of course we are. We’re going to try to win the FA Cup.
“We’ve got the Champions League, we’ve got the FA Cup, we can’t just say top four and that’s it. We’ve got to look if we can win something this year and, as I’ve said, I go into every single game as a Man United manager thinking we can win this game.
“To be top four, that’s not the dream. We’re Man United, you should always aim to win the league. We can’t do that this year but we’ve just got to look forward to that again because we have to get back to that. We are sixth so we are a way behind the top teams but we are challenging to be top three at the moment.”
Solskjaer said he was determined to ensure United were in much ruder health next season and in a position to hit the ground running, even if he was overlooked for the manager’s job on a permanent basis. “What Manchester United are going to look like next season with or without me, it doesn’t matter, I’m here to prepare for next season,” Solskjaer said. “We need to use these months now to be ready for the challenge next year.
“It’s about reorganising and just starting next season ready to challenge for … to get more points, and see where it takes us. If they keep the same attitude and application in training, yes, we’re going to get better.
“When you go away to Spurs and win that game [1-0] it’s fantastic. When you go to Arsenal, and win that one in a much better manner – that’s the way that I’ve seen the progress and the improvement. Everyone buys into the ideas we’re having. People said it was just about attacking, attacking, attacking.”
