Yazidi leaders issue edict accepting children born of Isil fathers

Leaders of the Yazidi faith have announced they will accept into their community the children of Yazidi women raped by Islamic State fighters, in what has been called an “historic” decision.

Thousands of women and young girls belonging to the religious minority were kidnapped from their homeland in Sinjar, northern Iraq, in 2014, and sold into sexual slavery by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), which considers the Yazidis devil-worshippers because of their monotheistic beliefs.

Hundreds were rescued from Iraq and Syria as Isil lost its territory, but what to do with their offspring has proved a thorny issue for the insular group.

The Yazidis, who have faced persecution in Iraq for generations, have tightly guarded their religion as a means of preservation.
